Until You're Sure, It's Better to Buy Used Musical InstrumentsDepending on the instrument you're thinking of playing, there are aspects of that instrument you'll want to check before you buy used musical instruments. Such as for a guitar you want to see if the neck is warped or twisted. If the strings are close to the fret board at the top and bottom but there's a wide gap in the middle, it's warped and you won't be able to learn to play properly. Ideally, the strings should be about the same distance from the fret board all the way down the neck. This holds true whether it's electric or acoustic. On an electric guitar make sure the pick-ups aren't rusty and that they actually work. If you can't plug it into an amplifier to listen to it, don't. There's no sense getting ripped off due to your decision to buy used musical instruments. On a reed instrument, like a clarinet of saxophone, make sure the mouth piece and the clamp that holds the reed aren't cracked and at least hold the reed tightly in place. You may have to replace the valve pads on these and you will want a new reed, but that's expected when you buy used musical instruments. On brass instruments, such as a trumpet or trombone, be sure all slides and valves work properly. It is no sin when you buy used musical instruments, but you must remember there's a reason the person, or store, is selling it. Pretend you know what you're looking for even if you don't. Read up on the instrument you're thinking of buying and take a look at repair guides so you can know enough to ask a few well-pointed questions. Only Buy From Reputable Dealers There are many outlets when you go to buy used musical instruments but your best bet is at a reputable music store. Local stores that have been around a while will want to keep their reputation in tact and don't want any undeserved black marks on their file at the Better Business Bureau. In contrast, the guy running the garage sale may not have these worries. So when you think about playing an instrument consider that if it doesn't work out for you and you lose interest, there are always people looking to buy used musical instruments. |
